The Fall of Twitch? Comparing the Biggest Streamer Platforms

Published

on

Twitch Streaming Platforms

While Amazon’s streaming platform Twitch has already faced plenty of controversies in the past, this most recent one may be a bit too large to brush aside and move on from. After being exposed for having allegedly accidentally removed all of the Israeli population from having the capacity to create an account on their platform, many advertisers, allegedly around 70%, for understandable reasons, started pulling away from the partnership.

If not addressed properly, and promptly, this could lead to the downfall of the entire company, shifting the online streaming world into a new reality. Below we will be talking about the potential future environment of the streaming scene, and comparing some of the competitors.

Talking about Kick

While not boasting the greatest reputation amongst the general public, Kick is still a decently popular, and more importantly, well-funded platform. Having some of the biggest names in the streaming world, such as XQC and Adin Ross, they are undoubtedly a force to consider when discussing this topic.

There are some potential advantages the platform can hold over the competitors:

Softer Moderation

Kick appeals to a particular crowd by maintaining a more relaxed approach to content moderation. Streamers on Kick find they have greater freedom to do whatever without as many restrictions. Though, restrictions are there and some of the especially controversial figures have been banned before. While this can attract “spicier” content that may not fly on YouTube or Twitch, it also means advertisers may hesitate to associate with the platform due to potential brand safety risks.

Though, seeing the connections that kick has, and the type of ‘spicy’ content in question, there probably will not be much of a problem. As it stands some of the biggest names on the platform are regularly streaming their gambling sessions where they play various games, from online poker at Bovada, to slots, and whatever else.

In fact, the gambling content being banned on Twitch is what facilitated the creation of Kick in the first place, as one of the platform’s co-owners, who also happens to be a popular streamer who regularly does gambling broadcasts, Trainwrecks, wanted a more-streamer friendly, open alternative.

Monetization Model

Speaking of streamer-friendly, Kick’s 95/5 revenue split has been one of its biggest attractions. In an industry where profit margins for creators can be slim, this kind of split allows streamers to earn significantly more than they would on platforms like Twitch or YouTube. Kick has also a typical tipping system that enables users to support creators directly, adding an extra income stream without platform cuts. This has encouraged many smaller creators to test the waters, and while in many ways Kick is top-heavy, it has become a viable alternative for some.

YouTube Live

Everyone already knows about YouTube, as it is the biggest video-sharing platform on the planet today. That alone gives it quite a big advantage already, but still, there were some hiccups on the road when discussing streaming. While initially there were criticisms, over time, YouTube has been slowly refining its live-streaming service. Some of the advantages the platform has over others are:

The Credibility and Moderation

Interestingly, both strong and relatively weak moderation can work to a platform’s advantage. Obviously, YouTube has a reputation for reliable content moderation, which appeals to advertisers who are increasingly cautious about brand association. While some users find this restrictive, many advertisers and creators see it as a favorable trade-off. YouTube’s strict policies against the so-called hate speech and violent content create a “brand-safe” environment, which has attracted more consistent advertiser interest. Pair this up with the backing that YouTube has, and you get a very reliable, dependable, highly successful platform.

Vast User Base

On a similar note, one of YouTube’s advantages lies in its enormous user base. With over 2 billion monthly users, creators on YouTube have access to a much larger audience than on Twitch, where monthly active users hover around 140 million. This sheer reach means that streamers can grow their channels more quickly, potentially increasing their income.

As for other details, like say, the 70/30 revenue split, while it does not sound as good as 95/5 that you see on Kick, YouTube also brings in significantly more, so that is certainly a factor to consider. One of the potential problems though, can be the fact that many of the bigger names on the platform do not stream, and stick to making regular content. While this is not as big of a problem due to the sheer size of the platform, and the amount of decently large names available, it is something worth considering.

Conclusion

As Twitch continues facing criticism, the future of the platform remains uncertain. What can be said for sure though, is the fact that the downfall will lead to massive shifts in the streaming space. There are plenty of big Twitch creators with a non-existent presence outside of their platform, who might have to make a choice between the alternatives sooner or later.
